Cap Sleeves

The instructions for these simple cap sleeves were provided by ModestProm.com reader Lynda, who writes: "This makes cap sleeves that have no hems, no machine sewing, and the bias chiffon stretches and doesn't wrinkle or pucker. We have even used chiffon scarves from the thrift store for fabric."

Linda's instructions:

"To make easy cap sleeves, cut football shapes on the bias from sheer chiffon that matches dress. Measure the top of the armscye to determine length (point to point) of football shape (i.e., 7 inches). Determine how long you want the sleeve (i.e. 3 inches), and double that measurement (this is the shorter dimension curve to curve).

"Fold it in half, lightly press the fold (which is the hem of the cap sleeve now). Baste the curved edges to both ease and hold in the shape. You can mark the center of the shape to match the top of the shoulder seam. It is easiest for me to use a seam ripper and tiny hand stitching to insert the sleeves, and I don't have to do more than open up the faced/lined shoulder and pin in place on sleeveless gowns. No wrestling with an inside out dress on the sewing machine!"
