Nothing could be easier to sew than the Sleek Shrug. All it takes is some hemming and two short straight seams. The Sleek Shrug is a great fill-in for a strapless or spaghetti strap dress, or a dress with a low back. It's also great as a very light jacket when the weather is cold. |

Here's a real-life example of how the Sleek Shrug can fill in a spaghetti strap dress (instructions follow the pictures).

| Sleek Shrug Instructions Materials (cost: $3-$10): 1/2 yard of a stretchy material, at least 45" wide (Note: if you have broad shoulders or a broad back, you may need to use 60" wide material and cut it down, or buy 2/3 yard of 45" material and put a seam down the middle) How to Make the Sleek Shrug (time: less than an hour) Cut a rectangle that is about 18" by 45". (Note: if you have broad shoulders or a broad back, you may need to make the rectangle wider - you can always cut it down later if you need to.) Hem each side of the material with a narrow hem. (I like to serge it and turn it under.) Fold your material in half along the shorter side, mark the fold with pins, and sew the open ends together.
Now check the fit. Hold the shrug behind your back like a rubber band and slip your arms through on each end. If the shrug needs to be tighter, make the seam as wide as it needs to be for the shrug to fit properly. Trim off excess. Open the shrug up and match the seam to the center point that you marked with pins. Stitch along top side, leaving a 6" opening on either end.
If desired, stitch a piece of about elastic down the center back to gather the shrug. (Use 1/4" elastic, about a 12" piece, and stretch it to the fabric as you sew. It shirs the fabric slightly, adding a little personality and elegance.) You're done! To put the shrug on: Slip your arms into the armholes. Pull the shrug down in back.
