The cloud shawl is a little more work to sew than the Sleek Shrug or Cap Sleeve shrug, but you can use a non-stretch fabric to sew it. (You'll get very different results, depending on if the material is stiff or drapable. Stiff material will poof out when you're done; soft material will lie in folds and cowls.) Cost: $3 - $10 Time to sew: Less than an hour |

| Materials: 1/2 yard of a 45" wide material, stretch or nonstretch About a yard of 1/4" wide elastic How to Make the Cloud Shawl Check to be sure the edges of your material are cut straight. If not, cut them so they are. Your material should look like a rectangle, with nice straight sides. (Note: If you have very broad shoulders or a broad back, you may need to make the shawl more than 45" wide. Just purchase a yard of material, cut in 18" strips, piece together, and cut to the necessary dimensions.) Fold your material in half along the shorter side, and mark the center.
Open the material up, and mark a perpendicular line down the center. Now mark 2 more perpendicular lines, each 6" away from the center line.
Stitch a 12" lenth of elastic along each line, stretching it to fit the fabric. This will create soft gathers in the fabric. Now stitch elastic to the top and bottom long sides of the shawl. Then turn the elastic under and hem down. Fold the shawl in half lengthwise and stitch the corners together. Turn the shawl inside-out and slip your arms into the armholes. Pull the shawl down in back if desired. Design & instructions © CMH Communications. For personal, noncommercial use only. |
