About ModestProm.com

People often ask me questions like, "Where did you get the idea for ModestProm.com?" or "What made you decide to do ModestProm.com?"

I always tell them the same story.

Some time ago, I was chatting with a young lady from my local congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

She was just delightful, full of life and fun, a talented young lady doing her best to make good choices. It was spring, and so I asked her about Prom. Her face lit up; she was hoping to be asked, and so excited to go.

I asked her about her dress, and for the first time, her face clouded over. "I don't know what I would wear," she said. She explained that she was having a hard time finding a modest dress she could feel good about wearing. Being a seamstress myself, I told her that if she couldn't find a dress, I would sew one for her.

A week later, she called me, bursting at the seams. She'd been asked to Prom! And yes, she and her mom would like me to sew the dress.

We decided to look around and get some ideas to help her decide what she wanted. So we headed off to the local mall to look at formal dresses.

This shopping trip was a real eye-opener for me. I thought looking for a Prom dress would be fun, but it turned out to be frustrating and discouraging. There was absolutely nothing she could wear and be comfortable in. Everything was too low-cut in the front or back (if there was a front or a back), too tight, slit too high, didn't fit, and on and on. My friend was uncomfortable the whole time, trying to pull things up (or down, or sideways, or whatever!). She was embarassed in the dressing room, clutching dresses to her chest, even with just the two of us there. There was no way she was going to enjoy herself, wearing one of those dresses to Prom.

I went home feeling sober. "If that's all there is out there, girls who want to be modest need some help and support," I thought.

Over the next few years, I began accumulating a "Modest Prom Dress Ideas" folder. I wanted to help, but wasn't sure exactly how. So I just stashed pictures, drawings, and notes in my folder, thinking that someday maybe I would do something.

Finally, there came a point where it all came together. I began to realize that perhaps the Internet could provide an inexpensive way to get information to lots of young women all over. At about the same time, my last child was going to first grade, giving me a little more freedom than before.

So I learned how to create a basic web site and began working on it. Along the way, many wonderful people have offered ideas, support, and help - especially  ModestProm.com's wonderful graphic designer, Misty Liu of Promoms.org.

The result has been ModestProm.com. I hope you'll enjoy ModestProm.com, and tell all your friends about the site. Please contact me with your feedback and ideas; I'll use them to keep making ModestProm.com better all the time!

P.S. What happened with my friend? We sewed her a dress out of gorgeous hunter green stretch velvet, very similar to the Easy Dress featured on ModestProm.com. She wore it with long white gloves, a shimmering irridescent wrap, pearls, and matching shoes (which we bought at a thrift store and covered with the leftover velvet from her dress). She was beautiful, she was modest, and she had a fabulous time. I hope ModestProm.com will help you do the same!
